Dr Kolapo Adelodun Lawrence

Head of Department

Profile & Experiences:

Dr. Kolapo obtained a first class degree in Microbiology from the Federal University of Technology in 1994, when he won the award as the best graduating student, Biology Department of the Federal University of Technology, Akure. He obtained his Masters and Doctoral degrees in Food and Industrial Microbiology from the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta, Ogun state in 2009 and 2012 respectively. Furthermore, he has a Certificate in Storage Technology and Pest Control of Produce.

His research experience spans over fifteen years and has focused on development of processes for optimization of locally fermented food products such Soybean Daddawa, Soy-yoghurt, Soy-cow milk yoghurt, Soy-corn milk, Soybean fortified garri and tapioca. . He undertook pioneering studies on the storage and preservation of soybean daddawa using locally available plant extracts such as ginger, garlic and onion. He has also researched on the toxicological aspects of food processing, handling and storage.

He has been involved in investigations on the use of Prosopis africana , Bridelia ferruginea , Terminalia glaucescens , Anogeissus leiocarpus , Dichrostachys cinerea  for the development of oral dentrifice. Similarly, the potentials of Moringa oleifera,  Entandrophargma utile, Chenopodium ambrosioides , Petiveria alliacea, Garcinia kola Heckel, Plumbago zeylanica  and  Uvaria chamae  for the management of Sickle Cell Anaemia have been part of his past investigations. Current trend in Nigeria is suggesting a paradigm shift from cattle pastorialism to ranching. In order to meet the nutritional need of ranched livestocks, his present research focuses on the possible use of Rhizopus oligosporous and Aspergillus niger for fermentation of cassava waste pulp for development of highly nutritious and safe animal feed. He also made technical contributions to the development of Coconut Milk Yoghurt (CO YO) in Australia.

He has many published articles and papers he has presented at notable conference. A comprehensive list of these can be accessed via the link below.

He is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences.
