Augustine University Celebrates Solemnity of the Ascension with Holy Mass Augustine University, Ilara-Epe, Lagos State, on Thursday, 14th May, 2026, held a Holy Mass at the Chapel of Mary Mother of the Church to celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. The Eucharistic celebration brought together members of the University community in prayer and reflection on the significance of Christ’s Ascension into heaven. In his homily, the University Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Andrew Toye, explained that the Ascension is more than the physical departure of Jesus into the clouds, but rather the completion of His post-resurrection appearances and the beginning of a new form of divine presence among His people. According to him, Christ’s Ascension does not signify absence, but a deeper and more powerful presence with believers. He noted that Jesus spent forty days with His disciples after His resurrection, preparing them for the mission ahead and strengthening their faith. Rev. Fr. Toye further explained that heaven should not merely be understood as a geographical location, but as a spiritual reality and the fullness of life with God. He described the cloud mentioned in the Scriptures as a symbol of divine presence and a meeting point between heaven and earth, as well as between humanity and the divine. He added that the Ascension signifies Christ entering fully into heavenly glory, seated at the right hand of God above all principalities and powers. Speaking further, the Chaplain described the Ascension as a symbol of hope for Christians, emphasizing that Christ is now universally present through the sacraments, especially in the Eucharist, and continues to remain close to His people. The Mass provided an opportunity for the University community to deepen its spiritual reflection on the mystery of the Ascension and renew its faith in Christ’s enduring presence.
