Honouring a Thinker: AUI Lecturer, Prof.  Omoregbe Celebrated for Contributions to African Philosophy

In a resounding tribute to one of Nigeria’s foremost philosophers, Professor Joseph Idemudia Omoregbe, the Department of Philosophy at the University of Lagos hosted a prestigious academic workshop in his honour on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

The event, expertly anchored by Karo Ogbenaka, commenced with a solemn rendition of the first stanza of the national anthem and a heartfelt acknowledgment of Prof. Omoregbe’s enduring legacy, describing him as the “grandfather of philosophy students” at the University of Lagos.

Retired Professor Onyeaghalaji, specially invited to chair the intellectual proceedings, declared the workshop open by introducing its central theme: "Joseph Omoregbe in the Nigerian Philosophical Space: Systematic and Historical Approaches." The workshop celebrated Omoregbe’s distinct style, blending systematic rigor with deep historical consciousness—an approach that continues to shape philosophical discourse in Nigeria and beyond.

The academic sessions were structured around four critical sub-themes:

"Philosophy Made Easy: Knowing Philosophy" – presented by Professor Paul Omoyefa
"Metaphysics Without Tears and Jurisprudence" – delivered by Distinguished Professor J.I. Unah
"Epistemology Made Easy" – handled by Professor Anthony Okeregbe
"Comparative Philosophy" – explored by Professor Edwin Etieyibo from Witwaterstrand University of South Africa

A delegation from Augustine University, Ilara-Epe, where Prof. Omoregbe currently lectures in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, was also present. The team was led by the Head of Department, Dr. Philip Edema, accompanied by other lecturers who paid glowing tributes to Omoregbe’s mentorship and scholarly contributions. It was noted that Prof. Omoregbe previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences at Augustine University.

The event concluded with a photo panorama capturing the celebrant, guests, and scholars, followed by the presentation of a commemorative gift to Professor Omoregbe.

The workshop concluded with a renewed call for intergenerational philosophical dialogue and the need to preserve the legacies of Nigeria’s intellectual icons.
