AUI at 10: Archbishop Emphasizes Purpose-Driven Education at Anniversary Thanksgiving Mass

In a spirit of solemn gratitude and reflection, the Augustine University community gathered on Wednesday, 25th June, 2025, to celebrate its 10th Anniversary Thanksgiving Mass at the Chapel of Mary, Mother of the Church, Ilara-Epe.

The Mass was presided over by the Proprietor of the University and Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Lagos, His Grace, Most Rev. (Dr.) Alfred Adewale Martins, who offered prayers of thanksgiving for the institution’s journey over the past decade, its achievements, benefactors, staff, students, alumni, and the Church.

In his homily, the Archbishop emphasized the central role of education in guiding individuals to truth and a deeper understanding of life. Drawing from the wisdom of St. Augustine of Hippo, the patron saint of the University, the Archbishop noted that true education must go beyond academic knowledge and serve as a path to discovering ultimate truths about self, society, and God.

He commended the leadership of the University for remaining focused on its mission of academic and moral excellence, and he encouraged both staff and students to continue pursuing knowledge in ways that uplift society and reflect Christian values.

The Thanksgiving Mass was attended by members of the Board of Trustees, Governing Council, Management, Staff, Students, Parents and invited guests, including the Dame Doja Otedola, mother of the Chancellor, Mr. Femi Otedola, the Former Vice-Chancellor of AUI, Prof. Steve Afolami and his wife, Prof. Carolyn Afolami, who joined in songs of praise and prayers in celebration of ten years of God’s faithfulness.

The occasion also witnessed the Sacrament of Confirmation administered to 29 students of the University, further underscoring Augustine University’s commitment to the spiritual formation of its students alongside academic development.

The celebration concluded with the official launch of the 10th Anniversary Commemorative Brochure at the University Convocation Hall, followed by goodwill messages and expressions of support from stakeholders.
