PHILOSOPHY 

 To train microbiologist to acquire knowledge and practical skills that are useful in the industry, job creation and be good materials for research and development.

THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

  1. To demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key scientific disciplines relevant to pure and applied microbiology.
  2. To make the student develop skills and acquire the necessary knowledge of teaching and productive research for solving current problems of the society in both basic and applied aspects of Microbiology.

(iii)        To communicate the knowledge of microbiology to meet the needs of the society,

            industry and the consumers for sustainable food production including public and

            environmental safety thereby enhancing the quality of life.

  1. To emphasize technological and vocationally-oriented training to enable the student  acquire the knowledge of microbiology and techniques necessary, for industries such as food  processing and preservation, breweries, water works,

medicine, pharmaceuticals,agriculture as well as research.

  1. To provide courses in Microbiology to students of other Departments and Faculties whose degree options require general knowledge of Microbiology and Biotechnology.
  2. To train students whose characters are within the acceptable norms of the immediate and global societies.

Holders with minimum of upper credit or NCE Holders with merit, candidates with adequate passes in advanced level programmes such as JUPEB, IJMB and Cambridge will also be considered for admission

Programme/Sub-discipline/Discipline Structure to include period of formal studies in the Universities Industrial training, planned visit and projects:

The normal duration of the B.Sc. degree programme in Microbiology in AUI is four academic years (eight semesters,) for UTME students admitted to the 100 level  and three years (six  semesters) for those admitted through direct entry (DE) into 200level.

Industrial training under SIWES for six months at the third year in any relevant industry is required.  Projects are carried out in related fields for two semesters in the final year.
